Bruce Silverglade owner of World Famous Boxing Gym Gleason’s NY-2015

Gleason’s is a boxing gym located on the Brooklyn waterfront. Since 1937, when the gym was founded in the Bronx, boxers with their eyes on Olympic glory or a shot at the title have been training at Gleason’s. Fighters who trained at the gym include Jake LaMotta, Roberto Durán, Benny “Kid” Paret, Gerry Cooney, and Mike Tyson. Before his first title fight against Sonny Liston, Muhammad Ali, then known as Cassius Clay, also trained at Gleason’s.

The gym was founded by Peter Gagliardi, a former bantamweight, who changed his name to Bobby Gleason. It moved to Manhattan and then to Brooklyn. Gleason’s is now owned by Bruce Silverglade.

Gleason’s is reminiscent of the time when New York was the center of the boxing universe, when there were dozens of serious gyms in the city and when big fights were often held in Madison Square Garden. Now Gleason’s is among the last of a breed. It manages to stay open by permitting average joes—men and women—to train side by side with professional boxers, and stages “White Collar Boxing” events that cater to this clientele.

There is also a wrestling school called the World of Unpredictable Wrestling run by WWE Hall of Fame member Johnny Rodz. Many wrestlers and wrestling promoters have come from there. Graduates include Tommy Dreamer, Matt Striker, Taz, D-Von Dudley and Vince Russo, Prince Nana, as well as Big Vito, Da Baldies, Elektra, Ricky Vega, The Musketeer, Mac Daddy Flexx, Tim Arson, Damien Demento, the late S.D. Jones, the late Rocco Rock, and many more.

There is a sign on the wall at Gleason’s, posting an invitation from the poet Virgil: “Now, whoever has courage, and a strong and collected spirit in his breast, let him come forward, lace on the gloves and put up his hands.” Prizefighters have long answered this call at Gleason’s and some still do. But now they’ve been joined by brokers and dentists.

There is an illustrated book called: “At Gleason’s Gym.” Owner Bruce Silverglade and Gleason’s elite trainer Hector Roca co-authored the book The Gleason’s Gym: total body boxing workout for women, with a foreword by actor Hilary Swank (she famously thanked Hector Roca when she received her Oscar for her role in the boxing movie “Million Dollar Baby.

Philippine Airlines (PAL) Announcement of Flying From Manila to NYC – 2015

Philippine Airlines is flying to the Big Apple, New York City, on March 15, 2015, marking the carrier’s much-awaited network expansion to the US east coast. In announcing the New York service, PAL Chairman & Chief Executive Officer Lucio C. Tan said, “This auspicious start of regular flights to New York will coincide with PAL’s 74th founding anniversary.” The four-times-a-week service – Manila-Vancouver-New York – will operate at Terminal 1 of New York’s JFK International Airport. PAL will have full traffic rights between Vancouver and New York. The addition of New York will bring to five the total US destinations, following Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu and Guam. The flight to New York – distance of 14,501 kilometers or approximately 16.5 total flying hours – will be PAL’s longest route.

Flight PR 126 departs Manila every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 11:50 p.m. Arrival in Vancouver is 8:50 p.m. on the same day. After a two-hour transit stop, the service continues on to New York at 10:50 p.m., touching down at Terminal 1 of JFK International at 7:00 a.m. the following day. The return service, PR 127, departs New York at 11:00 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, arriving in Vancouver at 1:50 p.m. It departs the Canadian city at 3:20 p.m. and lands back in Manila at 8:35 p.m. the following day. PAL will utilize the Airbus A340-300 jets, which seats 36 passengers in business class and 218 in economy. On board, passengers can expect to be pampered with PAL’s signature “at home” in-flight service, which features business class seats that convert to full-flat beds; in-flight entertainment system such as audio-video on demand in business, and gourmet cuisine designed by top international guest chefs.

The New York service will have the added benefit of boosting PAL’s Canadian operation. From March 15, 2015, the current daily service between Manila and Vancouver will spike to 11 flights weekly with three departure times from Manila – mid-afternoon, early evening and late evening – providing wider schedule choices to passengers. Manila-Toronto will add a fourth weekly frequency, increasing capacity on this long-haul route in time for the peak summer travel period out of Manila.

PAL’s return has been keenly anticipated by the huge Filipino-American communities along the U.S. eastern seaboard ever since the flag carrier pulled out of the region in 1997. About half a million ethnic Filipinos reside on the East Coast, with over 253,000 in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area, 90,000 in Virginia, 75,000 in Washington, D.C. and environs, and 31,000 in the Philadelphia metro area. Overall, Filipinos on the East Coast account for 15% of the estimated 3.4-million-strong Filipino population in the U.S., comprising a natural base market for PAL.JFK Airport is located at Queens Borough, 15 miles to midtown Manhattan, with convenient connection to the New York subway train system (MTA).

Lupe Gajardo is an emerging fashion designer from Santiago – Chile. Despite of her early age and career, both the press and the industry experts consider her Latin American fashion’s “prodigy child”.

Any discussion of the essential characteristics of her fashion style and inspiration must begin with her native country of Chile, unfamiliar to the majority of the people around the world yet locally admired for its natural beauty and cultural attractiveness. She lived in the north of the country (desert), studied in the Coast (Viña del Mar, Valparaíso) and finally returned to live and establish herself in the Capital. Through this experience, she benefited from the cultural richness of different areas of the country, which inspirations are translated into her collections.

NYFW Gallery Showcase of Designer ese AZeNABOR-2015

Esé Azénabor’s designs are inspired by the arts and her culture. They are daring, luxurious, extravagant, and shows her artistic side through her beading and attention to detail.
As the saying goes, Nigerian born Canadian transplant Esé Azénabor got to Texas as fast as she could. Her arrival on the fashion scene, however, required a few additional detours. But we think you’ll agree her creations were well worth the wait.

Hailing from a family who considered fashion design more of a hobby than a career, young Esé had to sweep her creative urges under the rug. The Azénabor name was grounded in the fields of medicine, law, and engineering, and she, in turn, attended the University of Windsor in Windsor in Ontario, Canada, and majored in accounting. A move to Dallas followed, to pursue a Masters Degree at Southern Methodist University, detoured to following her dreams and started designed handmade dresses for her self, friends and family. Since she was a little girl, Esé held to her mother’s belief in her talent for creating wearable art.

In 2012, without any financial assistance, this self-taught designer traded predictable college life for the wild world of fashion with the launch of her Self Titled ready-to-wear line. At her sewing machine, she conceptualized her fascination for heavy hand beading, crocheted lace, exquisite fabrics and embroidery. Inspired by a combination of vintage, African, Egyptian, and contemporary European influences, she merged cultures to create her debut of her Haute-Couture and Ready-to-wear luxurious collection. Esé has now debuted three collections and teamed up with her sister Dosé Azénabor to create her most recent SS15 Collection and today they are now partners for the fashion Label.

Esé Azénabor’s goal is to empower women through the art of fashion.

Ring 8’s Annual Holiday and Award Ceremony -2014

Ring 8’s membership is now in excess of 300 people, rivaling the numbers of its best years. Meetings are presided over by Ring 8’s current President Bobby Bartels, a 1960’s era welterweight, who reviews current business, tolls the ten count for deceased members, and introduces the guest speaker for the evening. Occasionally there is a surprise as when 1950’s middleweight contender Eugene “Silent” Hairston was introduced and honored, or when Danny “Bang, Bang” Womber, who once beat the great Kid Gavilan, was discovered at a Salvation Army shelter and was brought to Ring 8, given an award, and treated like the celebrity he once was. Just to see the expression of gratitude and happiness on the faces of these forgotten gladiators was worth 10 times the price of admission. Several years ago Ring 8 acted on rumors that ailing former featherweight champion Sandy Saddler was being neglected. The organization placed Sandy in a proper nursing facility where he was able to live out his final years in relative peace. The group did the same for ex-champs Phil Terranova and former heavyweight contender Tami Mauriello.
The biggest Ring 8 event is still the annual Holiday Dinner which takes place in December. Hundreds attend and the event is usually sold out weeks in advance.

The annual dinner is just one of several ongoing attempts to raise funds for the organization. Considering the terrible financial and physical condition that so many ex-fighters find themselves in, Ring 8’s efforts are minuscule compared to what truly needs to be done for these ruined warriors. Again, without a union, pension plan, or health benefits the boxer is at an extreme disadvantage. But at least there is one organization that is trying, with whatever limited resources it has at its disposal, to make a difference. Pity that the real power brokers in boxing which include the major promoters and the few mega-million boxing superstars do not pitch in and help.

Afo Verde Chairman and CEO of Sony Music Latin America -2014

Afo Verde, who since 2009 has been serving as president, Latin Region, for Sony Music Entertainment, has been promoted to the post of Chairman and CEO for the Latin Region, Spain and Portugal. Verde, who had previously overseen the label’s U.S. Latin operations as well as in Latin America, will now expand his purview to include Spain and Portugal, as is the case with Jesús López, chairman/CEO of Universal Music Latin America/Iberian Penninsula.

“By including Spain and Portugal under the Latin umbrella, a true Latin Region has been created,” said Edgar Berger, President & CEO, International, for Sony Music Entertainment in a memo. Verde will continue to report to Berger.

Verde, a composer and producer from Argentina has worked with Soda Stereo, Diego Torres and Fabulosos Cadillacs, among many others, and is known for his strong artist relations and his artistic involvement in projects. As an executive, he was director of A&R for BMG Argentina from 1996 to 2001. Then, in 2005, he was appointed president of Sony Music SUR (Argentina and Chile).

The company’s roster includes Ricky Martin, Romeo Santos and Chayanne, among many others.

Uptown fashion Week during NYFW at United Theatre NY-2014

Uptown Fashion Week is an eclectic fashion event that fosters a mixture of emerging, established, and celebrity fashion designers from all over the world to build a meaningful fashion trade; all while nurturing creative opportunities. Uptown Fashion Week continues to actively build a fashion bridge from Downtown NYC, the capital of fashion, to Northern Manhattan in NYC.

Fashion Week arrived at the United Palace for its 3rd installment. Last season’s show in February was a major success, providing to the fashion community that Uptown must be considered player in the New York City world of fashion. Uptown Fashion Week is fast becoming the place to be for socialites, celebrities and those seeking an alternative to the over-saturated Lincoln Center festivities.
