Vision Expo East 2014 and vendor Interviews at NY Javit Center

Networking experiences abound at International Vision Expo East 2014 (March 26-30 at the Javits Center in New York, NY), both online and onsite. This year, Vision Expo East will be home to more than 200 hours of special educational and networking events and meetings outside of the traditional continuing education program, which boasts over 325 hours of accreditation.

“We continue to see growth year after year demonstrating that International Vision Expo East is truly the complete eyecare event, unmatched anywhere else,” says Tom Loughran, group vice president for Reed Exhibitions. “The conference has become an opportunity for professional organizations’ members to not only shop every type of eyewear and eyecare product category on the exhibition floor and get discounted accreditation for the entire practice, but also to socialize and engage at the dramatically increased number of special events co-located at this year’s show.”

In addition to the onsite networking opportunities, Vision Expo East has significantly expanded its social media outreach, providing not only new methods of engagement onsite, but also a window into the Vision Expo experience for those not able to attend.

Visitors may catch a glimpse of Google Glass Explorers traveling the show floor, taking photos and video from a personal perspective and offering try-on experiences.

A contest  offered a different perspective of the conference as seen through visitors’ eyes. The “What’s Your #VisionExpo Favorite” Contest seeks photos that uniquely express and reflect the highlights of visitors’ day and evening experiences.

Live interviews with industry and professional icons will also take place in the #VisionExpo Social Media Zone, including a one-on-one with ODs on Facebook founder, Dr. Alan Glazier, on Friday, March 28 at 2:30 p.m. The interview is followed by a member meet-up at 3:00 p.m

OptometryStudents.com  launched  a social media contest for the more than 600 Optometry students pre-registered to attend International Vision Expo East. Students are encouraged to videotape practicing Optometrists for advice on things they wish they would have known before starting to practice, and sharing these videos on the organization’s website and on Facebook.

Exclusive Interview with Beibut Shumenov, WBA/ IBA World Light Heavyweight Champion from Kazakhstan 2014

Beibut Shumenov, (born 19 August 1983 in Kazakhstan) is a Kazakh professional boxer who fights in the Light Heavyweight division. He is the current WBA (Super) and IBA Light Heavyweight Champion.

Shumenov moved to the United States and based himself in Las Vegas where he turned professional in March 2007. In his debut in North Carolina, Shumenov defeated Walter Edwards with a knockout in the first round. He followed this up with another two knockout wins within 4 months.

In March 2008, Shumenov returned to Kazakhstan to fight American Donnell Wiggins for the vacant WBC Asian and interim PABA light heavyweight titles. Shumenov quickly dispatched the experienced Wiggins with a second round knockout and the next month beat former US national Golden Gloves champion Lavell Finger in the first round to add the vacant WBO Asia Pacific title to his WBC Asian and interim PABA titles.

In 15 August 2009 and only 8 professional bouts on his record Shumenov received a shot at the WBA belt when he took on the Spaniard Gabriel Campillo. The fight took place in Shumenov’s home country of Kazakhstan and resulted in the first loss of his career when Campillo was declared the winner by majority decision. A rematch took place on 9 January 2010, with the result being reversed this time and Shumenov declared the winner by what was considered an extremely controversial split decision. With this victory Shumenov became the quickest man ever to win a world title in the light heavyweight division, beating the record of 15 fights set by Jeff Harding in 1989.

Shumenov made the first defense of his title on 23 July 2010 when he won a unanimous decision against the previously undefeated Viacheslav Uzelkov. Shumenov then arranged to have a unification fight with the then WBO champion Jürgen Brähmer, the fight was scheduled to take place in Kazakhstan 8 January 2011. However just days before the fight was due to take place Brähmer left Kazakhstan and returned to Germany, citing illness as his reason for dropping out of the fight. In his place former middleweight world champion William Joppy stepped in at short notice, and was knocked out by Shumenov in the 6th round.

He successfully defended his title in Las Vegas on 29 July, 2011 against former Contender star Danny Santiago and again on June 2, 2012 in Las Vegas against Enrique Ornelas.

Hopkins VS Shumenov for The Light Heavyweight Championship Unification -April 2014

Washington, D.C. is known as a city where history is made. On Saturday, April 19, another historic event will take place in the nation’s capital when IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion Bernard Hopkins faces WBA World Champion Beibut Shumenov in an attempt, at 49-years-old, to become the oldest fighter in boxing history to unify world titles. The DC Armory, the site of several championship boxing matches in the last year, will host the return of the future Hall of Famer to the capital for the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.

Boxing’s elder statesman, Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins (54-6-2, 32 KOs) continues to achieve remarkable goals in the world of boxing-and has done just that since turning pro in 1988.   But he has amazed even more with his exploits over the last few years, as he twice became the oldest man to win a major world championship in the ring. Now 49-years-old, the pride of Philadelphia, Pa., had one of his best years yet in 2013, defeating Tavoris Cloud in March to win the IBF Light Heavyweight World Championship, and then successfully defending his title in October with an exciting win over Karo Murat. On April 19, the future Hall of Famer returns in an attempt to unify the 175-pound title. Additionally, as a partner in Golden Boy Promotions, Hopkins has undertaken out-of-the ring promotional duties that further solidify him as one of the most recognized and revered figures in the sport.

A native of Shymkent, Kazakhstan who now fights out of Las Vegas, 30-year-old Beibut Shumenov(14-1, 9 KOs) made his way to the top of the light heavyweight division with lightning-fast speed, winning his IBA title against Byron Mitchell in 2009, in just his eighth professional fight before adding the WBA title by defeating Gabriel Campillo two fights later in 2010. Since then, Shumenov, a 2004 Olympian for Kazakhstan, has successfully defended his title five times, defeating Vyacheslav Uzelkov, William Joppy, Danny Santiago, Enrique Ornelas and Tamas Kovacs. But this April, Shumenov gets his opportunity to make a name for himself in the history books if he can defeat Bernard Hopkins.
