Billionaire Real Estate’s Tycoon Larry Silverstein’s Keynote Speech at NYU’s Capital Markets Conf-2022

At almost 91.5 years of age, Larry Silverstein is one of New York’s premier real estate investors and developers. Well known today throughout the world as the owner of the World Trade Center, Mr. Silverstein has been a notable Manhattan real estate developer for over 50 years. Today, he is the chairman of his company, Silverstein Properties.

Born during the great depression, Larry started from humble beginnings in New York where he would grow up. After obtaining his college degree at NYU, he would marry his wife Klara. Together, they would raise three children.

Son of a leasing broker, Larry was exposed to the business at a young age. With the demands of having to support a family, he took an entrepreneurial leap with his father from brokerage to commercial real estate development and investment.

The risk paid off and after having delivered returns to his fellow investors, more projects ensued. His journey in real estate continued as he acquired, developed, rehabilitated and re-positioned commercial properties in Manhattan entirely on spec.

Born in 1931, Larry Silverstein is the son of Harry Silverstein who was a classically trained pianist, but a commercial leasing broker by trade. Larry was raised and educated in New York. Larry and his sister grew up in the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood until moving to the Washington Heights area.

As his father was a classically trained pianist, Larry and his sister would attend the High School of Music and Art. Upon finishing high school, he continued his studies obtaining an undergraduate degree from New York University (NYU). After his college degree, Larry also attended law classes in the mornings at Brooklyn Law School while he worked in the afternoons as a leasing broker.

In 1951, Larry would attend camp where he was tasked to wash the dishes. His boss in the kitchen was a young woman named Klara. After an invitation by her parents for dinner, the two would begin dating and eventually marry. They would have three children together.

The path to the World Trade Center began in 1980 when the Port Authority offered the keystone site up for bid. Larry Silverstein would win the bid to lease the site upon which he would build 7 World Trade Center. Initially engineered for a 25,000 square foot floor plate, Mr. Silverstein knew the local tenants were attracted to larger floor plates that had twice as much square footage.

Larry Silverstein would build 7 World Trade Center on spec with the larger floor plates desired by the larger tenants in the area. He was successful in leasing 1,000,000 square feet of space to Salomon Brothers. Equally important, he now had experience dealing with the Port Authority.

When the Port Authority decided to divest itself from ownership of the World Trade Center, they approached several candidates to submit bids for the office towers. Vornado was initially the successful bidder, but relinquished their successful bid to Larry Silverstein who was more experienced in affairs with the Port Authority.

Larry Silverstein, delivered his keynote speech at NYU Schack Institute of Real Estates 55th Annual Conference on Capital Markets in Real Estate on Tuesday December 6th 2022, at the Pierre hotel, New York City.

It was our first time covering this event, and I have to say the most uplifting encouraging speech I heard was by Larry Silverstein, Billionaire Chairman and founder of Silverstein Properties. He went into detail how he started his company alongside his father and how he bought his first building and went to so many banks that turned him down, and how he eventually got a loan from one of the banks, and built his empire. I was so impressed with Mr. Silverstein’s speech, it touched my heart, keeping in mind he is 91.5 years old as he said in his speech, I did a special video of this speech which you can sit back and watch and learn from one of the greatest real-estate Tycoon in the USA and possibly in the World. New York Produce Show 2022 & Tribute to Jim Prevor its Founder

The Eastern Produce Council and PRODUCE BUSINESS magazine present an exciting world-class event for the industry. The four-day event includes networking opportunities, a one-day trade show of over 400 companies, retail “thought-leader” breakfast panel hosted by Perishable Pundit Jim Prevor, educational micro-sessions and tours of the region’s vibrant industry, including local retailers, wholesalers, foodservice distributors, urban farms and unique eateries.

The program also includes an outreach to students and faculty at regional universities as well as distinguished culinary schools, plus the “Connect with Fresh” media immersion, luncheon and show tour involving influential bloggers, consumer editors and those working with all forms of social media.

I have covered the New York Produce Show, from day one since it made its debut approxemently 13 years ago. I met Jim Prevor , Founder of the New York Produce Show. As I attended my first show and as I engaged in conversation with Jim, I asked him many questions about produce around the world. He would take time and answer my questions, this was unusually done between breaks, at cocktail hour, at the media luncheon. Jim was always on the move. Moderating a panel, introducing the next speaker.

I remember one time, Jim had to get up and speak about a topic, about produce from South America, because one of the speakers was not able to attend. So Jim took the Bull by the Horn and tackled the topic his self. He spoke so elegantly, with facts, and had everyone’s attention while he spoke, during the Q&A, he answered each question with ease.

I asked Jim, during luncheon, after the panel, how were you able to do that. He went on to tell me that his family was involved in the Produce Business for many years, in the Hunters Point Market in the Bronx, when he got out of college he got involved in the family business and was given a position as an international sales person. Selling Produce to the World. He went on to say he travelled all over the world, met some of the most brilliant minds in this profession, he went on to say, he made notes and remembered so many things in his mind.

Hence forward I developed a great friendship with Jim, for many years he would enjoy all my articles and videos which I would send him to view. He would reply many times thanking me for the coverage. He had me attend almost every event and opened doors for me by introducing me to many great people in the industry.

As I hold my tears back, while writing this next sentence. Jim Prevor passed away on November 7th 2022, at age 61. A breakfast tribute took place to honor his legacy with a video tribute, his business partner for over Thirty years Ken Whitacre, Publisher of Produce Business, had tears rolling down his eyes as he saw the tribute on video.

Let me just say this, Jim was a walking genius who was vastly knowledgeable, had such a wonderful personality. Down to earth person you can ever know. I am proud to call him a friend, he will be deeply missed and never forgotten. Thank you Jim for your wisdom, friendship to me over the 13 years I have known you, Rest in Peace. We will eventually all join you. All I ask you is having a table of Fruits and produce ready to welcome us, so we can continue our conversations forever, dear friend.

The New York Produce Show 2022, broke every record, with attendance doubling on the show floor, I have not seen so many people in attendance, over the years I have attended. I plan on attending and showcasing Jim’s organization for many years to come.
