Interview with Kirk Hubbard, III CEO of Reyn Spooner Designs from Hawaii- 2014

World Liberty TV fashion team had the pleasure of interviewing Kirk Hubbard, the CEO of the Hawaiian clothing company called Reyn Spooner.

With a name that has become synonymous with the classic, Hawaiian Aloha shirt, the Reyn Spooner apparel brand has been gracing the scene since 1956, when it was originally known as Spooners of Waikiki. Back then, it was a much smaller operation that specialized in custom swim trunks.

Reyn’s founder Reyn McCullough started the store on California’s Catalina Island in 1949. He soon brought his first retail store to Hawaii in Honolulu’s Ala Moana Center as one of its original tenants. “Reyn worked closely with Spooners of Waikiki, and they decided to collaborate into [clothing brand] Reyn Spooner in 1962,” Hubbard says. Today, in addition to their own Hawaii retail stores, the apparel brand Reyn Spooner can be found throughout the U.S. in specialty and better department stores, internationally as well as online.

“It is true that in Hawaii, time has a way of stopping. Our way of life here has roots in the ancient, with nature and in Hawaiian culture. We are committed to enhancing the past by bringing our lifestyle right to you. We’ve been in business since 1956 using unique archival prints, exclusive vintage artwork, and work of celebrated artists to evoke the island life in our famous Classic & Modern Shirts. Try our special reverse print shirts that have a warmly-weathered-by-the sun worn quality to them. Add in our shorts and tees that embrace your casual and busy world. You will learn to live in the shirts and swimwear that are comfortable and tailor-made for you. So take your time (think island time) and see for yourself what is truly authentic. Hawaii will always be our source of inspiration and fine garment detailing will always be our tradition.”

Tadashi Shoji, the founder and chief designer of the Tadashi Shoji collection was born and raised in Sendai, Japan. He began painting and drawing from a young age and eventually moved to Tokyo, where he studied fine art. His talent was soon recognized and he was recommended for an apprenticeship with Japan’s leading contemporary artist, Jiro Takamatsu, who was credited with paving the way for the modern art movement in Japan during the sixties.

Today, the Tadashi Shoji collection is globally recognized and loved by devoted women ranging from busy working mothers to red carpet gracing celebrities. With his original designs and innovative collections, women regardless of shape or size are inspired to showcase their beauty and walk in confidence. It is this belief that drives Tadashi Shoji and his namesake brand. Employing expert techniques in draping, ruching and shutter pleats, each garment is masterfully tailored to flatter all figures.

For the spring 2015 Collection, Mr. Shoji created intricate detailing paired with playful transparencies. Insets of chain mesh on tulle ornament the bodices and sleeves and multi-colored jeweled embellishments are inspired by Millefiori glass. Sheer mesh necklines give the illusion of floating dresses. Softly sculpted silhouettes are introduced with unexpected twists. A glowing palette of pastels featuring frosted jade, pink shadow, and blue stone with a sprinkle of black floral motif lace are what filled his collection. His collection was soft, sensual, and polished for any woman who loves and is accustomed to Tadashi’s feminine cuts and silhouettes.

Max Azria’s Spring 2015 Collection did not fail to disappoint. The signature body-con dresses were very much present but what were added were a lot more skin being shown and a theme of contemporary women warriors ready to take on life. He had a little bit of everything – some cocktails/red carpet dresses, swimwear, bodysuits, and two piece outfits with colors like vivid orange, hot pink, classic black, nude pink, white, gunmetal gray, power blue and complimentary prints mixed in. The details on his collection were impeccably done well – as always.

NYFW: Jill Stuart Spring 2015 Show

Jill Stuart created what she calls “softer dressing” for her Spring 2015 Collection. It included sophisticated silhouettes with a slight A-line shape, kimono inspired wrapping at the waist on dresses, blouse, and skirts. The colors were mostly very light with tones like powered pink, nude, grays, and browns. The collection’s theme reminded me of a modern 70’s woman who doesn’t take things too serious. All in all, the Jill Stuart consumers will be very pleased.

Launched in 1993, Jill Stuart’s eponymous line is said to have really taken off when pieces from the collection were used in the 1995 movie Clueless. Today, the brand earns approximately $30 million annually in the U.S. but fares even better in Asia, grossing closer to $100 million. Stuart received major attention here in 2007 for using Lindsay Lohan as the first non-model celebrity in her ads. Known for showing during Fashion Week at the New York Public Library, the feminine, sometimes frilly collection can be found in her Soho flagship, as well as in higher-end department stores, and has come to include handbags, shoes, and perfume.

In 2007, Stuart launched a secondary line called Jill by Jill Stuart – now exclusive to the Japanese and Korean markets – followed by a lower-priced collection of dresses under the name Jill Jill Stuart in 2010, available at major department stores like Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s.
