Academy Award, Emmy and Grammy Winning Artist, Actor and Activist Common sat down with Andrew Panay, Panay Films and Vinayak Hegde ,T-Mobile to discuss the impactful and memorable advertising campaigns he’s made with the brands, in particular his 2024 ‘Audition’ Super Bowl commercial.
“I want people to think about these ad campaigns l do like they think about the campaigns from when we were kids,” he said while jokingly nodding to the infamous Wendy’s ‘Where’s the Beef’ ad from 1984.
Common shared how he didn’t tell his friends that he would be in a Super Bowl commercial but surprised them as it aired during the live broadcast, saying that he “truly felt great” about that commercial and the work he’s done with T-Mobile.
Emmy nominated actor, director and advocate Cynthia Nixon took the stage with Tirana Hassan, Executive Director of Human Rights Watch, to discuss the role that entertainment has in advancing human rights causes.
The conversation touched upon the importance of representation on screen, sharing authentic stories, and the power of empathy, to which Nixon shared her motivation for impactful storytelling – “I ran for governor in 2018 and was so focused on people taking me seriously, so I learned so many facts. What’s clear is that in politics, you hit people with stats and their minds turn off – what you need to do is tell stories.”
