29th Annual Cielo Gala at Cipriani Wall St NYC-2024

The Latino Commission on AIDS will host its annual Cielo Gala on Friday, May 31, 2024, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, kicking off Pride month and celebrating its 29th year.

Those being honored are Dr. Mitchell Katz, president and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals; former White House Director of National AIDS Policy Harold Philips; screenwriter and producer Steven Canals; and community activist, Valerie Jimenez-Reyes.

This year’s gala will be held in memory of beloved trans advocate and pillar in the New York LGBTQ+ community, Ms. Cecilia Gentili.

“We are humbled and absolutely thrilled to be joined by amazing leaders and advocates in the fight against HIV and AIDS as we continue our mission for creating safe spaces where all Latinx people can access proper healthcare,” said Guillermo Chacon, president of the Latino Commission on AIDS.

“Latinos remain disproportionately affected by HIV, both in terms of new HIV diagnosis and the total number of HIV cases. We must resist the urge of complacency and continue education and prevention efforts in all communities until we eradicate the virus completely!”

The Cielo Gala is an important platform to recognize the work of those who support the Commission’s goals of ending HIV and AIDS and improving overall health outcomes and wellness for the Hispanic/Latinx community.

Dr. Katz is the president and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals, the largest public healthcare system in the United States. Under his leadership, NYC Health + Hospitals has become a beacon of hope for those who have historically faced barriers to quality healthcare.

This year’s Esperanza Award celebrates Dr. Katz’s outstanding dedication to public health, particularly his unwavering commitment to serving underserved communities in New York City.

During his tenure as Director of the Office of National AIDS Policy from June 2021 to January 2024, Mr. Phillips played a pivotal role in shaping the Biden Administration’s domestic HIV/AIDS priorities.

His leadership was instrumental in monitoring and implementing the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, ensuring that America’s response to the epidemic was comprehensive, accelerated, and inclusive of the experiences of those at risk of and living with HIV.

Philips’ invaluable contributions have left a lasting impact on HIV/AIDS advocacy and policy. The Compañero Award serves as a testament to Mr. Phillips’ unwavering commitment, leadership and dedication to ending the HIV epidemic.

In a cultural landscape often marked by silence and stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS, Steven Canals emerged as a powerful voice for those affected by the epidemic.

Drawing inspiration from his own experiences and the stories of those within the LGBTQ+ community, Canals has dedicated himself to amplifying narratives that have long been marginalized. Beyond the screen, Canals has consistently leveraged his influence to effect real change.

Canals is being honored with the ILKA Award, named after the late actress and advocate Ilka Tanya Payán, for his tireless efforts in advocating for people living with HIV/AIDS, dismantling stigma, and expanding access to resources.

The award was presented by POSE actor, model, singer, and activist Laith Ashley.

The Denis Deleon Voz the Compromiso Award honors the selflessness and commitment of persons living with HIV and AIDS who dedicate themselves to enlighten the public about the disease and support others who are affected by it.

This year, the Latino Commission on AIDS is honoring Valerie Jimenez-Reyes due to her relentless organizing efforts with Housing Works and activism in the HIV and AIDS space.

After testing positive for HIV in 1989, Jimenez – Reyes has been a devoted advocate for people living with HIV/AIDS, as well as those suffering from homelessness, substance use, and mental health disorders in New York City.

The 2024 Cielo Gala was hosted by Dominic Colón, actor and producer. The night l also featured a fashion show by Brazilian designer and project runway alum, Layana Aguilar.

Three-time Grammy-winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra along with DJ Missy B will provide live entertainment during the event.

Humanitarians of the World Inc, Ukrainian Refugee Presentation -2022

The invasion began on the morning of 24 February, when Putin announced a “special military operation” for the “demilitarisation and denazification” of Ukraine, reinforcing his false narrative associating Ukraine with Nazism. Minutes later, missiles and airstrikes hit across Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, followed by a large ground invasion from multiple directions.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy enacted martial law and a general mobilisation. Russian attacks were initially launched on a northern front from Belarus towards Kyiv, a north-eastern front towards Kharkiv, a southern front from Crimea, and a south-eastern front from Luhansk and Donetsk.

Russia’s advance towards Kyiv stalled in March, with Russian troops retreating from the northern front by April. On the southern and south-eastern fronts, Russia captured Kherson in March and then Mariupol in May after a siege.

On 19 April, Russia launched a renewed attack on the Donbas region, with Luhansk Oblast fully captured by 3 July. Russian forces continued to bomb both military and civilian targets far from the frontline. Ukrainian forces launched counteroffensives in the south in August, and in the northeast in September.

Approximately, one month ago, Roman Liuzan , Liuba Liuzan, Yurii Luizan  and Dmytro Savka, a family left Kiev, and went to Poland refugee camp and from there they went to Ireland and then after that came to New York USA.

They left all of their properties, business and everything else, which they worked very hard all their lives.

Each one of them came, with a suitcase each, with literally nothing. Mr. Roman went on to say, it was very scary in Ukraine, and he and his family were lucky to leave as refugee’s or they also could have been killed in the war.

Daniel Shapiro and his Fiancé, have opened up their door to the four refugee’s, Mr. Shapiro went on to say, I am taking money out of my pocket, to feed each one them three times a day, take them around New York city to get them familiar with New York city. So hopefully things get better so the Government can help them, with different services.

We at Humanitarians of the World Inc., have been helping Mr. Shapiro with Produce, Groceries and beverages on a weekly basis. On Sunday Sept 25th 2022, Humanitarians of the World Inc, packed 4 bags for each one of the refugees, each bag consisted of, a hat, tee shirt, socks, Cell chargers, cable chargers for telephone, masks, sanitizers and winter hats.

Brand new Winter jackets with hoodies were given to each one of the refugees for them to wear during the winter to keep them warm. We at Humanitarians of the World Inc, (HOTWINC), have pledged to help feed the refugees, until they get government services, housing, food and other basic necessities, so they can stand on their feet.

Each and every one were very thankful to us with us giving them the above items to help them to ease the pressure of them.

We at Humanitarians of the World inc, (HOTWINC) www.hotwinc.org  have helped thousands of people, in USA, Europe, Asia, Caribbean Countries and South America.

We are asking for donations of money at this time, in whatever amount you can donate, it will help us to continue our humanitarian work and help the above refuges and many more who need our help.

I also like to thank Urgen Sherpa, former president of the Sherpa Association, for kindly donating brand new winter jackets, to Humanitarians of the World Inc. The above refugees thank you very much for your kind donation and they will think of you when they wear the jackets during the winter to keep them warm. Great act of humanity on your side, Myself and all our Humanitarians, salute you for your kindness. We also like to thank many organizations and individuals, you know who you are, who have donated Money, Food, Basic necessities, toys and much more.

During COVID-19, Humanitarians of the World Inc., has helped close to Ten Thousand people, with food, basic necessities, referrals, Community refrigerators. Your help is urgently needed kindly donate whatever amount you can afford, Humanitarians of the World Inc., (HOTWINC), by clicking here.
