Incorporated in 1966, UPROSE is Brooklyn’s oldest Latino community based organization. Today, UPROSE is an intergenerational,multi-racial, nationally-recognized community organization that promotes the sustainability and resiliency of the Sunset Park community in Brooklyn through community organizing, education, leadership development and cultural/artistic expression.

UPROSE’s work encompasses a variety of environmental justice and public health initiatives, from the development of the waterfront and local brownfields, to transportation, open space and airquality needs, to educational and youth empowerment campaigns.

UPROSE has achieved multiple groundbreaking accomplishments in community-based planning and development. In the wake of Superstorm Sandy in fall 2012, it has intensified its focus on the adaptation of Sunset Park to the changing climate and to deepening its community resiliency.

UPROSE, Brooklyn’s oldest Latino community based organization turns 50 this year. Founded during the civil rights movement, UPROSE is still here, still building, still fighting, still changing everything we touch.
UPROSE is a grassroots intergenerational, multiethnic, multicultural organization advocating for social, environmental and climate justice.

Despite our size, UPROSE has stopped the siting of power plants, brought back a bus line, helped double the amount of open space in Sunset Park and sent all our youth leaders to 1st tier colleges. From the frontline of the largest climate march in history to working diligently to ensure the industrial sector remains vibrant and provides local union jobs that help us build for a climate adaptable future.

Our 50th anniversary will be celebrated at BRIC in downtown Brooklyn on Friday September 30th from 6 pm to 11 pm. Our honorees include the New York City Environmental Justice Alliance, Crystal Clarity, a community artist, Gavin Kearney and the New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, and Brian Gonzalez, an UPROSE Youth Leader.

We invite you to join us in celebrating our communities work towards climate justice while building a foundation for a just transition.
